David was a great leader of God’s people. In Psalm 78:70-72, it says:
“He chose David his servant and took him from the sheepfolds; from following the nursing ewes he brought him to shepherd Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance. With upright heart he shepherded them and guided them with his skillful hand (Psalm 78:70-72).
There are two traits which qualify David for the task: (1) His character and (2) His skill. The same is demanded of the elders and future leaders of the church. 2 Tim. 2:2 tells us to entrust the Word to men who are faithful and able to teach others. We have already looked at character issues in the first section, «Personal Life.» In this section we will look at developing skillful hands for dealing with people. We all need to improve our skill with people. But, we must also desire to improve our skills and conform to scriptural teaching regarding relationships. If there is no desire to improve and to develop skillful hands, we will be quite ineffective.
The brief introduction to this section of the Leading God’s Flock is by Elder, Speaker and Author Doyle Roth.
